Energy Efficiency and Usability of web-based Personal Health Records

Usability is a critical aspects in adoption of e-health applications. However, its impact on energy consumption has not been thoroughly studied in e-health domain. The aim of this paper is to investigate the relationship between energy efficiency and usability in the context of personal health records (PHRs). Five web-based PHRs out of 19 were selected for this study and the energy consumption of these PHRs was assessed when performing 20 tasks. The results showed that the PHRs with best practices of usability consumed more energy than the others. Based on the findings of this study, recommendations for practitioners on how to trade-off between Usability and Efficiency were proposed.
