Study of the Mobile Money Diffusion Mechanism in the MTN-Cameroon Mobile Network

With a high rate of subscribers to mobile and a low rate of bank account, mobile money is a clear opportunity for Cameroonians to better manage financial transactions and risks. While in certain countries it has taken less than two years to be adopted massively, its diffusion among mobile subscribers in Cameroon is still very slow, with less than 5% regular users four years after being launched. This work explores the impact of the mobile subscriber network on mobile money and tries to identify the network diffusion mechanism of mobile money through a study of subscribers whose adoption behavior was observed during 14 weeks. From different analysis, we confirm the influence of mobile money users on new adopters. However, the decision to use mobile money is not directly related to the number of mobile money users or of potential users. This last point gives room for further research.
