SmartWalk Mobile - a Context-Aware m-Health App for Promoting Physical Activity among the Elderly

The population of the world is getting increasingly older, and with that new challenges appear. It is thus necessary to promote healthy aging, where people maintain their independence and autonomy for longer. The SmartWalk project’s aim is to create a physical activity monitoring system for smart cities for motivating the elderly to a more physical active lifestyle, that is monitored and adjusted by health care professionals for best results. This paper describes the various compo- nents that compose the project, focusing on the mobile application, how it works and how it was designed so that it would be easy to use for an elderly user who may not be used to the technology or has health impediments that make its use difficult.
