Internet Access in Brazilian Households: Evaluating the Effect of an Economic Recession
The present article analyzes how the Brazilian recession in 2014 affected internet access at home using annual data between 2012 and 2017 from a large scale, rep-resentative household survey by the Regional Center for Studies for the Devel-opment of the Information Society (Cetic). Pooled OLS and Probit regression models show that the Brazilian recession had a substantial negative impact on In-ternet access. We find that, on average, the demand for internet access at home decreased 8% due to the deteriorated economic situation. The data also reveal that regions in which internet access was more widespread suffered a higher percent-age decline. Households with lower levels of income and schooling also experi-ence a stronger negative impact on internet access rates due to the crisis.
